. >> christopher stevens first u.s. ambassador killed in an attack since 1979. stevens just started serving as ambassador in libya in may. before that, he was a u.s. diplomat during the revolution in libya and for several years prior he's a career diplomat and also a former peace corps volunteer in morocco. among the other americans killed, foreign service information officer sean smith, a husband and a father of two. he joined the state department ten years ago. he'd served in baghdad, south africa and most recently at the hague. the other two americans who were killed had not been identified. the government is still in the process of notifying their families. >>> joining me now is "time" magazine international editor jim frederic and former state department officer egypt officer joel reuben, director of policy for the plowshares foundation. good afternoon to both of you. >> good afternoon. >> good afternoon. >> jim, i want to pick up where mick left and richard engel left off, as well. the idea this was a spontaneous eruption of violence. >> right. >> as we le
